LAWYER SERVING THE PHILADELPHIA AREA ADVOCATES FOR CLIENTS' RELIGIOUS
RIGHTS
Religion is an essential part of many people’s lives and identities. Federal, state and local laws offer various protections with respect to religion. These legal protections extent to organized religions as well as the sincerely held beliefs of an individual.
The law prohibits religious-based harassment directed towards an employee that creates a hostile work environment. It is also unlawful to discriminate against an employee because of his or her religion. For example, religious discrimination may occur when an employer treats an employee different than other applicants or employees because of his or her religion. The law also requires that employers reasonably accommodate an employee’s religion, as long as doing so does not have a significant impact on the employer’s business. Reasonable accommodations may include a modified schedule to accommodate a religious holiday or observance.
